Dow: Systemic Sustainability Commitments

At Dow, the focus is on innovating alongside its customers and diverse colleagues, creating material science solutions that contribute to a sustainable future. Dow seeks to be the most innovative, customer-centric, inclusive, and sustainable materials science company in the world, bringing forward solutions that benefit the company, its customer and communities.

Protecting the Climate Through Environmental Stewardship

By 2030, Dow will reduce its net annual carbon emissions by five-million metric tons versus its 2020 baseline, which totals a 15% reduction. This is part of a broader commitment to becoming carbon neutral by 2050. To achieve this, Dow is investing in the first net-zero Scope 1 and 2 emissions ethylene cracker and derivatives site to decarbonize approximately 20% of Dow’s global ethylene capacity.

By 2030, Dow will implement a robust land management strategy. The top 20 water-dependent sites will have water stewardship plans, and 10 of those sites will be water-resilient.  By 2050, Dow will collaborate to conserve 50,000 acres of habitat, and our top 20 water-dependent sites will be water-resilient.

To champion these initiatives, Dow assists with the Loch Leven watershed project. Dow is working with the Nature Conservancy and Ecolab to restore and enhance wetlands in the lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley in Louisiana. Called “Loch Leven”, this project is reconnecting flood plains to the Mississippi River by installing improved water control structures to increase water supply to 4,500 acres of wetlands.

Advancing a Circular Economy with Safer Materials

By 2030, Dow will transform plastic waste and other forms of alternative feedstock to commercialize three-million metric tons (MT) of circular and renewable options annually. One initiative in this effort is the use of Dow PARALOID™ Additives, which help upcycle polyvinyl butyral (PVB) from car windshields into new applications like carpet backing and vinyl flooring.

To further support our efforts to transform the waste, we also aim to close the loop by helping to enable 100% of Dow products sold into packaging applications to be designed for reusability or recyclability by 2035.

An initiative Dow launched in 2022, the Mattress Recycling Program from RENUVA™, turns end-of-life polyurethane mattresses into polyols for use in new mattresses and other applications. It brings together every touch point in the value chain to create a new ecosystem, from collecting and dismantling to recycling and manufacturing. This collaborative process begins with the collection of end-of-life mattresses. The mattresses are then dismantled, and the old foams are recovered before heading into the recycling phase. Here, Dow has created a program that takes the discarded foams, and through a distinct chemical recycling process, creates an entirely new product – RENUVA™ polyol. The process leverages the world’s first industrial scale reactor for chemical recycling at its plant in France.

Cultivating the Community

Dow believes that advancing inclusion, diversity, and equity (ID+E) is both the right thing to do and the smart thing to do. Through an ID&E strategy, ALL IN 2025, Dow is focused on leading with inclusion, elevating its focus on diversity and embedding equity into its practices, policies, and processes to deliver breakthrough results by 2025.

In 2024, Great Place to Work® and Fortune World’s Best Workplaces™ named Dow one of the 25 World’s Best Workplaces. Dow has improved its global representation of women to 29.8% and U.S ethnic minorities to 28.1% as of 2023.

Additionally, Dow is a champion of a safety culture, placing its people as a top priority. Dow’s Plastics Additives site in Louisville, Kentucky was awarded the plant Safety Excellence and Safety Performance awards by the Vinyl Institute.
