Vinyl Sustainability Council Releases Sustainability Publication Highlighting Industry Progress

WASHINGTON – The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC), which is advancing sustainability in the vinyl industry, released today Our Sustainability Journey: 2015-2019, a transparent view into the VSC’s actions, plans and strategy. While the publication focuses on the efforts during the last five years, the vinyl industry’s sustainability journey goes back more than 40.

Our Sustainability Journey: 2015-2019 details the collaborative efforts of bringing industry stakeholders together to develop and implement a strategic framework that moves the U.S. vinyl industry forward,” said Jay Thomas, VSC Executive Director. “The naming of this publication was intentional; we recognize that sustainability is a journey and not a destination. We are committed to continuously improving the sustainability of the industry.”

Our Sustainability Journey: 2015-2019 documents the creation of the VSC and how members from across the vinyl value chain collaborated to determine where the vinyl industry could contribute substantially in the realm of sustainability. The publication highlights progress and goals in the following three impact categories, which align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 9 (Industry Innovation and Infrastructure), and 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production):

  • Resource efficiency, prioritizing recycling and waste management;
  • Health and safety, prioritizing both community and user health and safety;
  • Emissions, prioritizing emissions to air, biodiversity and emissions to soil, and emissions to water.

Additionally, Our Sustainability Journey: 2015-2019 showcases +Vantage Vinyl™, a voluntary process companies use to participate in the vinyl industry’s sustainability initiative to generate performance improvements and report on their progress, aligned with the VSC’s impact categories.

Our Sustainability Journey: 2015-2019 doesn’t only look back on where we’ve been but also looks ahead to where we can go,” Thomas said. “The VSC is providing leadership to help drive how our sustainability journey will evolve over the next five years.”
