Known as one of the most dependable material science companies in its industry, Teknor Apex took a definitive step forward in its commitment to sustainability in 2012 with the introduction of BioVinyl®, a class of market-leading, flexible, vinyl compounds comprised of bio-based plasticizer that meet compliance criteria for both Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) and REACH Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC). Teknor Apex now manufactures numerous BioVinyl compounds that address the environmental and sustainability concerns of processers in a range of applications.
Commitment to Collaboration
Finding sustainable ways to source energy is a priority for companies across the globe, and Teknor Apex’s partnership with Hyperlight Energy is yet another example of the company’s commitment. Hyperlight developed an innovative, concentrated solar power system to capture renewable energy. Hyperlight’s simple, robust, low-cost system – Hylux™ – uses extruded plastic tubes as the mirror support structure for the photovoltaic technology. Hyperlight’s collaboration with Teknor Apex led to the development of lightweight, modular, and recyclable hollow profiles made from an innovative Apex® vinyl compound that can be molded to virtually any shape. This has resulted in a renewable energy source that provides robust performance in an outdoor environment while withstanding the elements without degradation over time.

Enterprise-Wide Energy Efficiency
Teknor Apex’s sustainability journey is evident not only in its material science innovations, but as the company has also looked inward to find ways to be a better corporate steward of the environment.
Beginning in 2022, Teknor Apex’s “Global Energy Team” focused on reducing the amount of electricity consumed by its plants while seeking opportunities to use clean energy sources that reduce environmental impact. The team launched a global “1 million Kilowatt-Hour Challenge” that was intended to identify energy-saving solutions and leverage these efforts throughout all its manufacturing plants, reducing more than 1.7 million kilowatt hours (kWh) since April 2021 at six of them. Eight months later, the company determined that it had exceeded its original goal. Sites implemented energy-saving products, including lighting upgrades, variable frequency drives, insulation of steam pipes, and air compressor improvements. Moving forward, the goal has been elevated to “5 by 25” with the idea of saving five million kWh by 2025.
