Tarkett Drives Sustainability for Commercial Flooring

At Tarkett, social and environmental responsibility aren’t add-ons. They’re woven, stamped and sealed into everything the global flooring manufacturer does. Tarkett has a firmly established reputation as a pioneer in promoting sustainable practices based on Cradle to Cradle principles and designing healthier, more circular products. Tarkett’s commitment to radical transparency means the company doesn’t just say this, they prove it – with the help of third party-verified Environmental Product Declarations, Material Health Statements, and many other product certifications.

Independent Certification, Rigorous Testing

Tarkett is the only commercial flooring manufacturer that offers asthma & allergy friendly® CERTIFIED products that support the well-being of people with chronic respiratory illness. Certification takes place through a collaboration between Allergy Standards Limited, which developed the label, and the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Allergy Standards puts flooring products – as well as any adhesives and recommending cleaning solutions – through rigorous testing procedures based on expected use and maintenance. For example, post-installation chemical emissions are measured over a 14-day period as well as the levels of allergens retained after cleaning. Tarkett’s PVC flooring has demonstrated extremely low levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and is expected to promote good indoor air quality.

Commitment to the Circular Economy

Where others see rubbish, Tarkett sees opportunity. The company has pioneered techniques to recycle PVC flooring, in addition to carpet and linoleum, through ReStart®, its take-back and recycling program. With ReStart, Tarkett aims to divert valuable resources from landfill and cut down on emissions from incineration. With the addition of a Director of Circular Economy in 2022, the North American division has ramped up its reclamation efforts and is on target to collect over 1 million pounds of flooring in 2023 – doubling its numbers from the prior year. Most of the material collected is either recycled by Tarkett or by industry partners, with less than 10% ultimately going waste-to-energy.

Climate Roadmap 2030

In December 2022, Tarkett set science based targets (SBTi) and a roadmap to reestablish sustainability goals for 2030. By then, the company seeks to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 30% across the entire value chain and increase recycled content in product lines to 30%. With vinyl being the best polymer to reach recycled content goals by 2030, Tarkett’s commitment to recycling continues to drive new innovations in the marketplace.
