BASF Becomes Latest Company to Join the Vinyl Sustainability Council

Washington, D.C., December 12, 2023 – The Vinyl Sustainability Council (VSC), a self-funded business council advancing sustainability in the vinyl industry, is pleased to announce its newest member – BASF. BASF becomes the 15th company to join the VSC in 2023, which showcases the increased importance companies in the vinyl industry are placing on sustainability. BASF is the largest chemical manufacturer in the world with a portfolio spanning a wide range of products. It is an important supplier of plasticizers and other additives and raw materials to the vinyl value chain.

“I’m glad to welcome BASF, a company with multinational reach, into the VSC,” said Jay Thomas, the Executive Director of the VSC. “Pushing toward a more sustainable future needs to be a priority for every business in the vinyl value chain. Partnering with a sustainability leader like BASF will bring further credibility to the work we are doing at the VSC and help to accelerate the incorporation of sustainability principles throughout the industry.

BASF has set a goal to be net-zero in its carbon emissions by 2050 and a 25% decrease in emissions by 2030 compared with 2018. As a company developing energy-intensive chemicals, BASF understands that it needs a multifaceted approach to positively impact the environment. One way BASF is tackling this challenge head on is by embracing the circular economy. It has incorporated sustainable sourcing of alternative raw materials – which may be bio-based, but also can be obtained through credible sustainable processes and supply chains. Another crucial part of BASF’s circular economy program involves obtaining raw materials from waste-based resources through several different recycling processes. By 2025, the company aims to process 250,000 metric tons of recycled feedstock globally, and by 2030 the goal is to double circular sales to reach 17 billion euros.

“Embracing the circular economy in all of our products is extremely important to us,” said Patrick Harmon, Industry Manager in BASF Corporation’s Houston office. “We’re thrilled to be joining the VSC to better understand the needs of our downstream markets and to support the vinyl industry as we develop sustainable solutions to meet existing and future challenges.”
